K-Pop for Beginners Part 10: Common Korean Words

Before I start with the actual words I think that I should explain the Korean age system, seeing as some of the words has to do with age. The Korean age system starts at being ‘1’ at birth, and also, regardless of when your exact birthday is, you are considered to be a year older as soon as the new year begins. And just one more thing, I do not speak Korean, I know a few words and phrases from watching dramas and listening to music, reading translations and so on, but I can't say for 100% that these are correct, okay ~

♥ Aboji – Literally translates into ‘father’, and it’s generally used in a formal manner.

♥ Achim – Korean for ‘morning’.

♥ Ae-in – A Korean word for ‘lover’.

♥ Aegyo – The act or ability to show cuteness, a feminine trait that has come to refer to actions by both men and women that can be considered cute or charming. To do aegyo is to act cute or charming around others, no matter if it’s intentional or not. Practically anything goes as aegyo, as long as it’s cute, baby-like, and makes you go “Awww”.

♥ Aigoo – A Korean expression that shows frustration and/or exhaustion.

♥ Ajikdo – A Korean word that means ‘still’.

♥ Aniya – Korean for ‘no’.

♥ Annyeong – A Korean word for ‘hello’ or ‘hi’, and can also be as ‘goodbye’.

♥ Annyeong haseyo – Formal Korean phrase to say ‘hello’.

♥ Appa – A Korean word for ‘dad’, and it’s generally used in an informal manner and tends to be used by people in close relations.

♥ Areumdawoon – Korean for ‘beautiful’.

♥ Babo – A Korean word that means ‘fool’ or ‘idiot’.

♥ Bam – Korean for ‘night’.

♥ Banmal – Informal speech that you should only use with those close to you or younger then you. It’s very rude to use when you speak to someone older than you unless a certain level of familiarity has been established.

♥ Bingeul Bingeul – A Korean phrase that is commonly found in K-Pop songs, and it translates into ‘Round and Round’.

♥ Bogoshipda – A Korean term for ‘I miss you’.

♥ Byeol – A Korean word that translates into ‘star’.

♥ Cheoreom – Korean for ‘like’.

♥ Chingu – The Korean word for friend. It can also be used to refer to someone the same age (in the Korean sense) as you.

♥ Chonun _____ imnida – Korean phrase to say ‘My name is _____’ or ‘I am _____’

♥ Chuseok – A Harvest Festival celebration, where everyone goes back home to see their family. Similar to Thanksgiving in America.

♥ Daebak – A Korean word that means “big win”, “great success” or “awesome”. It can be used to describe something or someone who is awesome. For example, “This song is daebak!” or “Oppa, you were daebak at the Football competition!”

♥ Dongsaeng – Literally translated into ‘younger sibling’, and it is a word that both males and females use to refer to someone younger than them that they are close to.

♥ Eonjena – A Korean word for ‘always’.

♥ Eotteoke – A Korean word that means ‘how’.

♥ Gwenchana – A Korean word for ‘okay’.

♥ Haengbok – A Korean word that means ‘happiness’.

♥ Hajiman – A Koran word for ‘but’ or ‘however’.

♥ Hal su isseo – A Korean term for ‘you can do it’.

♥ Hamkke – A Korean word for ‘together’ or ‘with’.

♥ Hanbok – Korean word that mean ‘Korean clothing’, and since it isn’t worn commonly anymore the term generally refers to the traditional garb that often is characterized by vibrant colors and simple lines, with no pockets. Many idols post pictures of them wearing Hanboks for Chuseok.

♥ Haneul – A Korean word that means’sky’.

♥ Hangul – The Korean writing system.

♥ Hangulmal – The Korean language.

♥ Haru – A Korean word that translates into ‘day’.

♥ Haru Haru – A Korean phrase commonly used in K-Pop, it translated into ‘Day by Day’.

♥ Hoobae – Literally translated into ‘Junior’, and it’s used to describe or refer to a person with less experience than you in a field, such as in school or the workplace. Age is not necessarily a factor in who is the hoobae or sunbae, for example, in the entertainment industry the hoobae is the one that debuted later. For example, Zico (Block B) is 21, and Kris (EXO) is 23, but Kris is still the hoobae since he debuted later then Zico.

♥ Hyung – Literally translates into ‘older brother’, and it’s a term used by males to refer to other older males.

♥ Hyungnim – A polite way of saying ‘hyung’.

♥ Ipsul – A Korean word that means ‘lips’.

♥ Ireoke – Korean for ‘like this’.

♥ Jagiya – A term used by couples to refer to their partner. The word literally translated into ‘(one)self’, which implies that the person that you call this is very important to you.

♥ Jebal – Korean for ‘please’.

♥ Jib – The word translates into ‘Album’ or ‘Home/House’, and it’s a term used to refer to a group or singer’s full length album. Since singles and mini albums are very common in the K-Pop industry it usually takes a considerably large amount of time for a group/singer to have a jib.

♥ Jigeum – Korean for ‘noe’.

♥ Jjang – Korean word that means ‘the best’, ‘awesome’, and is used similarly to ‘epic win’.

♥ Kamsahamnida – A Korean word ‘thank you’. Kamsahamnida is formal.

♥ Kaseum – A Korean for ‘chest’ or ‘heart’.

♥ Kidaryeo – A Korean word that means ‘wait’.

♥ Kojitmal – A Korean word that means ‘lie’.

♥ Kyeopta – A Korean word that translates into ‘cute’.

♥ Mae-il – Korean for ‘everyday’.

♥ Maeum – A Korean for ‘heart’ or ‘mind’.

♥ Majimak – A Korean word for ‘last’.

♥ Maknae – The youngest member of a group, sometimes there may be some confusion over who the real maknae is when another member has a baby face or tends to use a lot of aegyo.

♥ Meori – Korean for ‘head’.

♥ Michyeo – A Korean word that means ‘crazy’.

♥ Mideoyo – A Korean word for ‘believe’.

♥ Modu – Korean for ‘all’.

♥ Molla – A Korean word that means ‘I don’t know’.

♥ Momzzang – A combination of the Korean words for ‘best’ and ‘body’, and is a word used to refer to a male or female that has posted their picture on their cyworld or blog and become famous due to their overall body fitness.

♥ Namja – A Korean word that means ‘man’.

♥ Nappeun – A Korean word that means ‘bad’.

♥ Ne – Korean for ‘yes’.

♥ Neomu – A Korean word that means ‘too’ or ‘very’.

♥ Noona – Literally translates into ‘big sister’, and is a word used by males to refer to older females in either a platonic or romantic sense. A word commonly used by both fangirls and fanboys to refer to older females, thou, for a girl the correct term would be ‘unnie’.

♥ Norae – A Korean word that translates into ‘song’.

♥ Noraebang – A Korean word that translates into ‘song room’, and it’s the Korean equivalent of the Japanese Karaoke. It’s set in private rooms, and is a common social activity between friends and family.

♥ Nugu – A Korean word for ‘who?’, as in ‘what person(s)?’. It’s a phrase coined by international fans (more specifically the Live Journal community Omona They Didnt) to refer to groups that, when their names are mentioned, causes people to ask “Who?” due to their lack of popularity and failure to gain relevance.

♥ Nun – A Korean word that means ‘eyes’ or ‘snow’.

♥ Nunim – A polite way of saying ‘noona’.

♥ Omona – An Korean expression that is similar to ‘Oh my God!’

♥ Omoni – Literally translates into ‘mother’, and it’s generally used in a formal manner.

♥ Oneul – A Korean word for ‘today’.

♥ Oppa – Literally translated into ‘big brother’, and it’s a word used by females to refer to older males, either in a platonic or romantic sense. It’s a word commonly used by fan-girls to refer to older male idols that they like.

♥ Pyeongsaeng – A Korean word for ‘lifetime’.

♥ Sarang – A Korean word that translates into ‘love’.

♥ Saranghae – A Korean term for ‘I love you’.

♥ Seonmul – A Korean for ‘gift’.

♥ Sesang – A Korean word that means ‘world’.

♥ Shigan – Korean for ‘time’.

♥ Shimjang – A Korean word for ‘heart’.

♥ Ssanti – A Korean word that means ‘cheap’, ‘cheesy’, or ‘goofy’. In K-Pop it’s usually used to refer to a style of comic dancing usually seen on variety shows. It was popularized by Wooyoung (2PM), and then by Jokwon (2AM). Said dace-style is known for its lack of overall style and overboard gestures.

♥ Sunbae – Literally translated into ‘Senior’, and it’s used to describe or refer to a person with more experience in a field, such as in school or the workplace. Age is not necessarily a factor in who is hoobae or sunbae, for example, in the entertainment industry the sunbae is the one that debuted first. For example, Ricky (TEEN TOP) is 18, and Jin (BTS) is 20 (soon 21), but Ricky is the sunbae since he debuted before Jin.

♥ Ulzzang – A combination of the Korean words for ‘best’ and ‘face’, and it’s a word used to refer to a male or a female that has posted their picture on their cyworld or blog and become famous due to their attractiveness.

♥ Umma – Literally translates into ‘mum’, and it’s generally used in an informal manner and tends to be used by people in close relations.

♥ Unnie – Literally translated into ‘big sister’, and it’s a word used by females to refer to other older females. It’s a word commonly used by fan-girls to refer to older female idols that they like.

♥ Wae – The Korean word for ‘why’, and can similarity be used like ‘what for’ and ‘how come’.

♥ Yaksok – A Korean word for ‘promise’.

♥ Yeoja – A Korean word that means ‘woman’.

♥ Yoboseyo – A Korean word for ‘hello’. It’s used when answering your phone, or when trying to get someone’s attention.

♥ Youngwonhi – A Korean word that means ‘forever’.

♥ Youngweontorok – A Korean word for ‘forever’.
