♥ 4D – 4D stands for 4 dimensional. A 4D person is a person who seems to be living in their own world, or dimension, and that tends to act weirdly. It’s the kind of person that post photos or tweets that make you go “WTF?”, or saying and doing the strangest things on variety shows, things that you have to pause and think about ‘what the * just happened?’. These are the kind of characters that make the lives of K-Pop fans so much more entertaining by making us laugh with their constant antics and loose tongues.
♥ 5 Year Curse – A wide spread superstition among K-Pop fans, that popular groups will face hardships or disbandment in their 5th year after debuting. There have been many groups that has suffered the affects of this supposed curse, groups like; H.O.T, SS501, Big Bang, DBSK/TVXQ, Shinhwa, Super Junior and S.E.S. However, there is no real evidence that this is a real curse, and it is up to the individual to decide if it is real or if the cases are just coincidence.
♥ Acgae – A network of fans and fan communities for individual members of JYJ & TVXQ that are known for spreading malicious rumors about the other members and/or hoping for their disbandment so that their idol of choice can pursue a solo career.
♥ Age Lines – Idols that are born the same year are from a certain age line, for example, all idols born in 1995 belong to the ’95 line.
♥ AKTF – An abbreviation of ‘Always Keep The Faith’, which is the personal motto of Yoochun (TVXQ/JYJ), and after TVXQ split up it was adopted by the fans who hoped (and still do) for them to reunite as a five member group again. The meaning of the phrase changes depending on the user, and so it has come to represent a variety of different sentiments.
♥ All Kill – When an artist has the #1 song or album on all of the 7 major music sites in Korea. To achieve an all kill on a daily chart (on the day of a new release) is normal for most groups. Weekly and monthly all kills are much harder to achieve.
♥ Anti-fan – A person who expresses hatred towards a group or idol.
♥ Bias – A personal favorite idol, or member of a group. A bias can either be an idol that you prefer over everyone else in K-Pop (or any other genre, really) or the member you like the most in a certain group. For example, my bias in TEEN TOP is L.Joe, but my bias in EXO is Tao. A bias is basically the idol(s) that you are the most attracted or attached to. An ultimate bias, or ultimate is that one idol that stands out over the rest of the idols that you like, the one that you think is the absolute best, the number one idol in your heart. For example, my ultimate is Zico from Block B. The term ultimate bias is, of course, only used when you have several biases to begin with.
♥ Bias Ruiner – The member that may not be the most popular or most attractive to you, but still tears at your heartstrings and make you think about cheating on your bias.
♥ Black Ocean – When a large group of fans turn their light sticks off during the performance of a certain group or idol to show their dissatisfaction of either the group or their fandom. It’s believed to have been first put into action during the 2008 Dream Concert, with the forming of the CARTEL and with the participation of the rest of the attending fans during Girls Generation’s performance due to their fans behavior. Though this is generally performed by fans to groups or singers outside of their own fandom, there have been cases where the fans have turned on their own members or group.
♥ CARTEL – Refers to the union of the, at the time, three most powerful fandoms (Cassiopeia, Triple S, and E.L.F) during the 2008 Dream Concert in creating the Black Ocean against Girls Generation.
♥ CF – An abbreviation of the words ‘Commercial Film’.
♥ Chocoball – A club led by Super Junior’s Heechul, all of the members have the blood type AB and they were personally invited by him. The name derives from the phrase ‘쪼금 사이코 같지만 볼수록 매력적인 사람들의 모임 (“jjokoboll”) (Although we’re a bit psychotic, the more you see us the more charming you’ll find us)’. Currently the members include Honki (F.T. Island), Jonghyun (F.T. Island), Jungmo (TRAX), Simon C (Supreme Team), Junhyung (B2ST), Jia (Miss A), Jang Geun Suk, Mithra Jin (Epik High), Jo Sungmo, Sangchu (Mighty Mouth), Nassun, and more.
♥ Choding – A term used to refer to an elementary school student, or someone possessing qualities of an elementary school student. For example, an idol can have choding tastes, meaning he or she prefers sweet, childish things, like chocolate milk over coffee.
♥ Chunlish/Chunglish – A combination of the words “Yoochun” and “English”. It’s a fan-created term used to describe Yoochun’s (TVXQ) garbled use of the English language, most commonly occurring in his self-written raps. It has spawned several phrases and words that are known across the fandoms, such as “It’s like bling bling balls”, “I really want to touch myself”, “My love for you is like the gingerbread man’s vitality”, and “We promised to be reasonable and passionable”.
♥ Comeback – A comeback does not refer to a group or artist that is coming back after being inactive for a long time, a group or artist has a comeback with every new release.
♥ Comeback Stage – The first performance at a music show for the promotion of a new title track or single, there is no minimum time to wait between new releases for it to be a comeback.
♥ Debut – A debut is a group or artist’s very first performance, usually performed on a music show.
♥ Digital Single – A song that is only available through an online download.
♥ Emoshiki – A mix of the words ‘emotional’ and ‘Tohoshinki’ (Tonoshinki is TVXQ’s Japanese name) used by fans to express the feeling of sadness over the separation of the originally 5-member group into JYJ and 2-membered TVXQ. Depending on the user it may imply a longing for the members to re-unite.
♥ Engrish – Poorly pronounced English, usually in a very adorable way.
♥ Fan Chants – Words chanted to cheer on the singers during a specific song. The chants are made to go along with the melody of the song, and they are shouted during a part of the song where the singers are not singing, as to not disturb them. The chants usually consists of the members names, and are created by the group/singer and then given to their fandom.
♥ Fan Club – Official and non-official fan clubs are created to be more organized while supporting their group or idol of choice.
♥ Fan Colors – Specific colors that are used by fans to show their support for a group or singer, the colors are assigned by the entertainment that the group/singer belong to.
♥ Fandom – Short for ‘fan domain’. A fandom encapsulates everything that goes on in a fan community (such as TV, movies, literature, comic books, and music), this can include conversation, fan fiction, blogs/vlog, fan art, fan clubs, audience support, etc.
♥ Fangirl/-boy – An eccentric fan, to ‘fangirl/fanboy’ is to be overly excited about news about a group, idol, etc.
♥ Fanservice – When a member is being cute and/or touchy towards another member, in a way that could be interpreted as romantic, for example, through skinship. Fan service can also be when a member is being cute towards their fans, for example, through throwing hearts at them and saying that he/she love them.
♥ Flashmob – When fans gather to sing/dance to K-Pop in an attempt to bring K-Pop to said place. For example, France’s flashmob got them SM Town Paris.
♥ Full Album – A full length album usually contains a dozen song, and recent trends have K-Pop idols release many singles and mini albums before releasing a full length album.
♥ Goodbye Stage – The last performance on a music show before ending promotions of a title track or single.
♥ Grease – Overzealous, often embarrassing, acts of fanservice. For example, when B.A.P was asked about any secret relationships they’ve had in the past, Himchan answered “It’s not just me, but all of our members. I can’t say who it is, but I can tell you the name that we have for them: Babys”.
♥ Hallyu – the Hallyu Wave, or The Korean Wave. A term for the increased popularity of Korean culture and entertainment around the world.
♥ Hwaiting!/Fighting! – A phrase used to cheer someone one in any situation, it’s used kind of like “You can do it!”.
♥ Kkab/Kkap – A term used to refer to doing something with an excessive amount of energy, usually dancing. Kkap idols basically look as if they’ve been possessed by a demon when they perform their versions of girl group dances.
♥ Konglish – Korean + English, or Romanized Korean.
♥ Koreaboo – A non-Korean person who is overly obsessed with Korean (pop) culture, generally to the point of vocalizing their desire to be re-born as Korean or trying to make themselves appear more Korean, either physically or by adopting Korean manners and speaking habits. Koreaboos are often easily spotted by their (often incorrect) use of Korean words and phrases in everyday conversations and their strong believe that anything Korean is automatically better than everything else.
♥ Kyuline – A group of people that Kyuhyun (Super Junior) considers to be his closest friends. Currently the members consist of Changmin (TVXQ), Jonghyun (CNBLUE), Gyuri (KARA), Ryeowook (Super Junior), Victoria (f(x)), and Minho (SHINee).
♥ Leader – The leader keeps the group together, and often represents the group. The leader is also most commonly the oldest member of the group, but not necessarily.
♥ M.I.L.K Club – A club created by Super Junior’s Leeteuk (President), Girls Generation’s Yoona (Vice-President), and Girls Generation’s Taeyeon (Manager). The name derives from the phrase ‘Made In Lovely Kin’, and the club serves as a gathering place for depressed idols to gain comfort and reassurance from their sunbaes in hopes of recovering. All of the member were personally invited and approved by the three founders.
♥ MC – The host/-s for a live show or TV program.
♥ me2day – A social network created in Korea.
♥ Meet Up – An event where fans meet up with each other, for the only purpose of meeting other fans.
♥ Mini Album – Usually contains 2 to 3 new tracks in addition to remixes or instrumentals. It’s the middle ground between releasing a single and a full length album, and is probably the most common cd release.
♥ Mordney Present – A phrase heard at the beginning of many songs released by DSP Entertainment, those songs have been produced by Mordney and he considered them his gift for the group. It is often misheard as ‘More than present’.
♥ MR/MR Removed – An abbreviation of ‘Music Removed’. It refers to the process of removing the background music from songs or live performances in order to be able to more clearly hear the vocals. It’s generally used to either praise or criticize a group/idol, and it’s most commonly done during their comeback or debut period.
♥ Music Program – Shows like Mnet M!Countdown, KBS Music Bank, MBC Music Core, SBS Inkigayo, etc. During promotions of a new title track or single artists will appear on these shows to promote their new release. The MCs of each of the programs may change several timer per year.
♥ MV – An abbreviation of the words ‘Music Video’.
♥ Netizen – A combination of the English words ‘internet’ and ‘citizen’, which is used to refer to people who use the internet, most commonly the people who has lots of opinions and the fans that show their support through the internet.
♥ NG – An abbreviation of the words ‘no good’, and it refers to outtakes or mistakes made during filming.
♥ Onew Ache – Also known as Dubu Ache. A fan-coined term to describe the feeling of loving Onew (SHINee) to the point of your heart hurting.
♥ Oppar – A bastardized form of the Korean word ‘oppa’, and it was originally supposed to be a word used to ridicule the people who use its original form (and related terms) in everyday conversations, but has since then become distorted and become a word that is simply viewed upon as a cute was of saying ‘oppa’.
♥ Original fan – A term that can be used to refer to either a fan that has been supporting them since their trainee days or a fan that never looks towards another group/idol.
♥ OTP – An abbreviation of the words ‘One True Pairing’, it’s basically the ship (sometimes ships) that you prefer over all of the rest. For example, my OTP is TaoRis, but I also ship BaekYeol, HunHan, BangLo, etc.
♥ Pedo-noona – A combination of the words ‘pedophile’ and ‘noona’, and it’s a term coined by international fans to refer to fans who stan or are attracted to younger idols. Use of the term is usually met by disdain due to the implied trivialization of pedophilia and the over-use of it by fans who are either less than 3 years older than the object of their affection or they themselves under the age of consent.
♥ PR – An abbreviation of ‘Picture Request’, it’s a term used on fan-sites to request pictures of a specific idol or event.
♥ Prection – A term often used as a replacement for the word ‘precious’ or to describe anything adorably bad.
♥ Prince/King – A male idol that is very good at doing something. For example, a selca king is someone who is good at taking selcas and so it a lot.
♥ Princess/Queen – A female idol that is very good at doing something. For example, an aegyo princess is someone who has a lot of aegyo.
♥ Repackaged Album – When an album is re-released with a new title track in addition to other tracks and
remixes.
♥ Roll like a buffalo – A phrase from the song “Two Moons” by EXO in their 12th teaser, the phrase isn’t in the full length version of the song thou, neither in the Korean or the Chinese version. The phrase doesn’t really hold any meaning when fans use it.
♥ Rookie – A term used to refer to a newly debuted groups and singers. Usually a group/singer carry the ‘rookie’ label for a year.
♥ Samchon Fans – “Uncle Fans”. A term used to describe fans that are older than the targeted age group, and they are usually known for their higher spending ability, since they generally have regular jobs.
♥ Selca – A combination of the words ‘self’ and ‘camera’, it’s basically a picture that you’ve taken of yourself. It’s a very common thing for idols to take selcas and post them on different social medias, like Twitter.
♥ Ship – To endorse a romantic relationship.
♥ Skinship – A Japanese-created combination of the words ‘skin’ and ‘friendship’. It was originally coined to describe the intimacy between a mother and her child, especially during bath time. In Korea, thou, it is generally used to refer to skin-to-skin touching in a romantic or sexual context. Such as hugging, holding hands, etc.
♥ Ssaesang – ‘Stalker fans’, these are “fans” that will practically do anything to anything to follow or get close to their idol of choice. The stalker culture among these “fans” can sometimes make the worst paparazzi seem like kittens.
♥ Stan – The phrase ‘stan’ actually comes from Eminem’s song by the same name, and it’s been adopted as a term to refer to fans that are a bit obsessed by a certain group or singer. The term is usually used lightly, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing.
♥ Sub-unit – A smaller group within a larger one, usually created for the group to be able to create a fan-base in a different market than the one the original group mainly focuses on. Normally the sub-unit is made up of members of the already existing group, but occasionally new members are added for the sole purpose of the sub-units activities.
♥ The Big 3 – The three biggest entertainment labels in K-Pop: SM Entertainment, YG Entertainment & JYP Entertainment. They are the most dominant entertainments in the K-Pop industry, and they make most of the income. Sometimes Cube Entertainment is added due to their recent growth in the industry, making it the Big 4. Thought disproven at several occasions, it is generally believed that if you debut under one of these 3 you are guaranteed success.
