K-Pop for Beginners Part 5: Groups, Idols & Nicknames

♥ 2AM – A part of the larger group ‘One Day’. 2AM debuted in 2008 under JYP Entertainment. The members are; Changmin, Jinwoon, Jokwon, and Seulong.

♥ 2NE1 – 2NE1 debuted in 2009 under YG Entertainment. The members are; Bom, CL, Dara, and Minzy.

♥ 2PM – A part of the larger group ‘One Day’. 2PM debuted in 2008 under JYP Entertainment. The members are; Chanseung, Junho, Junsu, Nickhuyn, Yaecyeon, and Wooyoung.

♥ 4Minute – 4Minute debuted in 2009 under Cube Entertainment. The members are; Gayoon, Hyuna, Jihyun, Jiyoon, and Sohyun.

♥ B.A.P – B.A.P debuted in 2012 under TS Entertainment. The members are; Daehyun, Himchan, Jongup, Yongguk, Youngjae, and Zelo.

♥ B1A4 – B1A4 debuted in 2011 under WM Entertainment. The members are; Baro, CNU, Gongchan, Jinyoung, and Sandeul.

♥ B2ST – B2ST debuted in 2009 under Cube Entertainment. The members are; Dongwoon, Doojoon, Hyunseung, Kikwang, Junhyung, and Yoseob.

♥ Bacon – A nickname used to refer to Baekhyun (EXO), it started when international fans realized that the pronunciation of this name, Beakhyun, sound similar to the word bacon.

♥ Baozi – A nickname used to refer to Xiumin (EXO), it started because Xiumon looks whitem chewy and cute. Just like a baozi, or steamed bun.

♥ Big Bang – Big Bang debuted in 2006 under YG Entertainment. The members are; Daesung, G-Dragon, Seungri, T.O.P, and Taeyang.

♥ Block B – Block B debuted in 2011 under Stardom Entertainment, but in 2012 they sued their company and ended their contract. They re-singed under their new label, Seven Seasons. The members are; B-Bomb, Jaehyo, Kyung, P.O, Taeil, U-Kwon, and Zico.

♥ BoA – BoA debuted in 2000 under SM Entertainment.

♥ Brown Eyed Girls – Brown Eyed Girls debuted in 2006 under Nega Network. The members are; Gain, Jea, Miryo, and Narsha.

♥ BTOB – BTOB debuted in 2012 under Cube Entertainment, The members are; Changsub, Eunkwang, Hyunsik, Ilhoon, Minhyuk, Peniel, and Sungjae.

♥ BTS – BTS debuted in 2013 under Bit Hit Entertainment. The members are; J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, Rap Monster, Suga, and V.

♥ CNBLUE – CNBLUE debuted in 2010 under FNC Entertainment. The members are; Jonghyun, Jungshin, Minhyuk, and Yonghwa.

♥ DBSK/TVXQ/JYJ – DBSK is their old name. DBSK/TVXQ debuted in 2003 under SM Entertainment, and in 2009 three of the members filed a complaint against SM and left the company. They then formed the group JYJ, and the two members that were left continued promotions as TVXQ. The members are; (TVXQ) Changmin, Yunho / (JYJ) Jaejoong, Junsu, Yoochun.

♥ Boyfriend – Boyfriend debuted in 2011 under Starship Entertainment. The members are; Donghyun, Jeongmin, Kwangmin, Minwoo, and Youngmin.

♥ Dubu – Dubu is the Korean word for tofu. It is also a term referring to Onew (SHINee), and it originates from the meaning of Onew (“soft”) and his resemblance to a block of tofu. It’s also known as ‘OnDubu’.

♥ Ero-Maknae/Ero-Minji – A term used to refer to Minzy (2NE1) and her tendency to dance provocatively despite her young age and status as the maknae of 2NE1.

♥ EXO – EXO debuted in 2012 under SM Entertainment. The members are; Baekhyun (K), Chanyeol (K), Chen (M), D.O (K), Kai (K), Kris (M), Lay (M), Luhan (M), Sehun(K), Suho (K), Tao (M), and Xiumin (M).

♥ F.T. Island – F.T. Island debuted in 2007 under FNC Entertainment. The members are; Honki, Jaejin, Junghun, Minhwan, and Wonbin.

♥ f(x) – f(x) debuted in 2009 under SM Entertainment. The members are; Amber, Krystal, Luna, Sulli, and Victoria.

♥ G.NA – G.NA debuted in 2010 under Cube Entertainment.

♥ Girl’s Generation – Or SNSD. Girl’s Generation debuted in 2007 under SM Entertainment. The members are; Hyoyeon, Jessica, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Sunny, Taeyeon, Tiffany, Yoona, and Yuri.

♥ Gomthra – A combination of the Korean word ‘Gom (“bear”)’ and Mithra Jin’s (Epik High) name. It is a widely used nickname for him, both by celebrities and fans alike, due to his resemblance to a bear.

♥ Happy Virus – A nickname used to refer to Chanyeol (EXO), the name started from him using it in the EXO introductions.

♥ Hyunwhore – A term used to refer to Minho (SHINee), it originated from his affinity of “collecting” hyungs from various other groups as his close friends.

♥ Infinite – Infinite debuted in 2010 under Woollim Entertainment. The members are; Dongwoo, Hoya, Sunggyu, Sungjong, Sungyeol, and Woohyun.

♥ Jay Park – Jay Park debuted in 2008 with 2PM under JYP Entertainment, but he left the group in 2009 due to circumstances. In 2011 he released his first mini album as a solo artist, and since then he’s been working his way up in the Korean music industry.

♥ Jewelry – Jewelry debuted in 2001 under Star Empire Entertainment. The members are; Inyoung, Jihun, Jungah, and Minah.

♥ KARA – KARA debuted in 2007 under DSP Entertainment. The members are; Gyuri, Hara, Jiyoung, Nicole, and Seungyeon.

♥ Mal – It literally translates into ‘Horse’ and ‘Speak/Word’, and it’s a commonly used nickname for Jungmin (previously SS501) and was originally coined as a pun due to his affinity of carrots and his habit of non-stop speaking. It’s also a commonly used nickname for Siwon (Super Junior) that refer to his superior physical condition and horse-like leg muscles.

♥ MBLAQ – MBLAQ debuted in 2009 under J.Tune Entertainment. The members are; Cheondung, G.O, Joon, Mir, and Seungho.

♥ Miss A – Miss A debuted in 2009 under JYP Entertainment. The members are; Fei, Jia, Min, and Suzy.

♥ NU’EST – NU’EST debuted in 2012 under Pledis Entertainment. The members are; Aron, Baekho, JR, Minhyun, and Ren.

♥ Nunneo – A nickname for Junho (2PM) that comes from him misspelling his name (as 잊누너, which is Nuneo) out of excitement as a teenager when he bought his first ‘Starcraft’ game with his own money.

♥ OnLeader – A term used to refer to to Onew (SHINee), and/or his style of leadership. The word derives for his stage name (Onew) and his position as leader of SHINee.

♥ Panda – A nickname commonly used to refer to someone who has the distinct features of dark circles under their eyes, likening them to a panda. Some of the idols with the nickname panda; Tao (EXO), Junsu (2PM), Seungri (Big Bang).

♥ Rain – Rain debuted in 1996 under JYP Entertainment, but in 2007 he left the company to start his own entertainment, J.Tune Entertainment.

♥ Se7en – Se7en debuted in 2003 under YG Entertainment.

♥ Secret – Secret debuted in 2009 under TS Entertainment. The members are; Hyosung, Jieun, Sunhwa, and Zinger.

♥ SHINee – SHINee debuted in 2008 under SM Entertainment. The members are; Jonghyun, Key, Minho, Onew, and Taemin.

♥ Shisus – A wordplay on the word Jesus used to refer to Siwon (Super Junior), due to his very serious view on religion.

♥ SISTAR – SISTAR debuted in 2010 under Starship Entertainment. The members are; Bora, Dasom, Hyorin, Soyu.

♥ Super Junior – Suju for short. Suju. Super Junior debuted in 2005 under SM Entertainment. The members are; Donghae, Eunhyunk, Hangeng, Heechul, Kangin, Kibum, Kyuhyun, Leeteuk, Ryeowook, Siwon, Shindong, Sungmin, and Yesung.

♥ SS501 – SS501 debuted in 2005 under DSP Entertainment. In 2010, when their contract ended, they all moved on to new entertainments to focus on their solo careers, but SS501 hasn’t officially disbanded. The members are; Heo Young Saeng, Kim Hyun Joong, Kim Hyung Joon, Kim Kyu Jong, and Park Jung Min.

♥ TEEN TOP – TEEN TOP debuted in 2010 under T.O.P Media. The members are; C.A.P, Changjo, Chunji, L.Joe, Niel, and Ricky.

♥ U-KISS – U-KISS debuted in 2008 under NH Media. The members are; AJ, Eli, Hoon, Kevin, Kiseop, and Soohyun. Previous members are; Alexander, Dongho, and Kibum.

♥ VIXX – VIXX debuted in 2012 under Jellyfish Entertainment. The members are; Hongbin, Hyuk, Ken, Keo, N, and Ravi.

♥ Wonder Girls – Wonder Girls debuted in 2007 under JYP Entertainment. The members are; Hyerim, Sohee, Sunye, Yeeun, and Yubin.
